Before it was purchased by the navy it was a coal carrier called the Earl of Pembroke taking coal from England to Scandinavia. The 74 gun ship was the classic line-of-battle ship of the late 18th century. The Bellona was one of the most important of this successful class and was built at Chatham in 1760 and was not broken up until 1814.
